Girl Rising

  • This event has passed.

The documentary film GIRL RISING is the centerpiece of a global campaign to educate and empower girls. It spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances who rise above their conditions in life. It is narrated in English, but the girls tell their stories in their native languages with English subtitles.

Directed by Academy Award-nominee Richard E. Robbins and produced by award-winning former ABC News journalists, this moving documentary follows the stories of girls such as Sokha, an orphan who rises from a life in the garbage dump in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to become a star student and an accomplished dancer; Suma, who writes songs that helped her endure forced servitude in Nepal and today crusades to free others; and Ruskana, an Indian ‘pavement-dweller’ whose father sacrifices his own basic needs for his daughter’s dreams.

Each story is narrated by celebrated actresses: Cate Blanchett (Haiti), Priyanka Chopra (India), Selena Gomez (Sierra Leone), Anne Hathaway (Afghanistan), Salma Hayek (Peru), Alicia Keys (Cambodia), Chloe Moretz (Egypt), Meryl Streep (Ethiopia), and Kerry Washington (Nepal). Girl Rising also features original music from Academy Award-winner Rachel Portman and Lorne Balfe.
