Alex Film Society Presents

The Great Dictator (1940)
Starring Charlie Chaplin

  • This event has passed.

HE TALKS! Charlie Chaplin’s hilarious, still devastating political satire about Hitler and the Nazis was his first all talking picture. The Great Dictator is set in the fictional nation of Tomania, loosely disguised as Nazi Germany. Chaplin plays both a Jewish barber and the country’s fascist dictator.

Join us for this groundbreaking film that was nominated for 5 Academy Awards® – Best Picture 1940; Best Actor and Screenplay (Chaplin); Best Supporting Actor (Jack Oakie, hilarious as Napaloni); Best Score (Meredith Willson). Also featuring the wonderful Paulette Goddard.

Special onstage guests author John Bengtson (Silent Traces: Discovering Early Hollywood Through the Films of Charlie Chaplin ) and David Totheroh, grandson of Chaplin’s The Great Dictator cinematography, Rollie Totheroh.

Starting the festivities is our cartoon du jour Rabbit of Seville (1950 Warner Bros.) starring Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. And bring your sweet tooth, we’ll be celebrating Charlie’s 129th birthday!
