Imagine. Glistening gossamer and chimerical creatures evoked by the power of ethereal music. In this season-opening concert, LACO performs colorful works in a program of pure enchantment. Mendelssohn’s charming interpretation of a Shakespearean classic meets Jalbert’s powerful contemplation on the mystifying universe. Just barely in her 30s, major international star Lelia Josefowicz dazzles in Prokofiev’s Concerto, and Kahane and the Orchestra weave a magical spell with Haydn’s whimsical Symphony. In the words of the brilliant Bard, this concert is “such stuff as dreams are made on.” Violinist Leila Josefowicz displayed explosive virtuosity and stylistic versatility…her violin pulsed with rhythmic vitality.” (The Washington Post) She performs on the 1724 Guarneri del Gesu.Concert Preludes are fun, informative and free to all ticket holders.Join us one hour before each concert in the theatre. Some Preludes will feature LIVE performances of short chamber works. All will provide interesting insights into the music and the artists.Program and artists subject to change.

Schimann Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129 listen

Cheer on principal clarinet Joshua Ranz as he performs the iconic Clarinet Concerto that Copland wrote for jazz great Benny
Goodman. Then, celebrate the bicentennial of Schumann’s birth with principal cello Andrew Shulman in the composer’s tender, elegiac Concerto. Wolf’s blissful Serenade is the perfect foil for the melancholy of Schumann, and Kellogg’s textured tour de force, an homage to Mozart, contrasts with the wild beauty of Golijov’s Last Round, deemed “the best Piazzolla tango Piazzolla never wrote.” (Gramophone) It’s a program that showcases the extraordinary versatility of the LACO musicians.“Solo clarinetist Joshua Ranz and his plummy sound lent a pure and supple urgency…and was a source of pleasure all evening.” (The Chautauquan Daily)Andrew Shulman’s “interpretation was of the highest caliber…[he] gave a fabulously nuanced and impassioned performance.” (Salt Lake Tribune)

Drum roll, please. The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra proudly presents a dramatic range of musical themes—from grandeur and majesty to poignancy and passion.Ignat Solzhenitsyn, principal guest conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and talented son of the famous Russian novelist, leads the Orchestra in Lutosławski’s immensely powerful tribute to Bartók and conducts the expressive Mozart Concerto from the keyboard. The concert ends with a bang — the long roll of the timpani announcing Haydn’s joyous 103rd Symphony, one of the composer’s finest masterpieces.Ignat Solzhenitsyn “is a musician’s musician and pianist’s pianist. [His] performance was rhythmically incisive… breathtaking…immaculately detailed, with beautiful tone, utterly transparent in voicing. Bienvenue en France! The 21-year-old French pianist Lise de la Salle has emerged as one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation. She makes her LACO debut in Saint-Saëns’ delightful, show-stopping nod to Parisian cabaret music. Her dynamic countryman Louis Langrée, celebrated music director of New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival, illuminates the Ravel gem and brings his refined musical sensibility, formidable technique and radiant personality to the challenge of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. Don’t miss it!

Lise de la Salle “played so well that, for much of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe…the exhilaration didn’t let up for a second until her hands came off the keyboard and everyone could finally come up for air.” (The Washington Post)

Louis Langrée “led compelling performances…The Beethoven was theatrical in the best sense. A laser-like focus animated rhythms and boldly carved shapes, heating even the finest pianissimo.(Dallas Morning News

Gather with other Baroque lovers on Bach’s birthday weekend. Our concert celebrates the incredible variety of this revered composer’s repertoire. Making her Los Angeles debut, the sensational Sasha Cooke interprets the dark intensity and touching beauty of the rarely performed Cantata and famous Aria, and the Orchestra revels in the festive brilliance of Suite No. 3. Jeffrey Kahane conducts the opening Concerto from the piano and brings his masterful touch to the Suite’s beloved Air on the G String. This concert is pure gold!

Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke caused a sensation in her 2008 Metropolitan Opera debut as Kitty Oppenheimer in John Adams’ Doctor Atomic. The New York Times praises her “rich, supple sound and passionate delivery,” “aching, wistful intensity” and “expressive, amber-hued voice.”
