Friday, July 17, 2009 - Brothers At War

Brothers At War is an intimate portrait of an American family during a turbulent time. Jake Rademacher sets out to understand the experience, sacrifice, and motivation of his two brothers serving in Iraq. The film follows Jake's exploits as he risks everything - including his life - to tell his brothers' story. Often humorous but sometimes downright lethal, Brothers at War is a remarkable journey in which Jake embeds himself into four different combat units in Iraq.
Unprecedented access to U.S. and Iraqi combat units takes him behind the camouflage curtain with secret reconnaissance troops on the Syrian border, into sniper 'hide sites' in the Sunni Triangle, through raging machine-gun battles with the Iraqi Army. Ultimately, the film follows his brothers home where separations and life-threatening work ripple through their parents, siblings, wives, and children. Brothers at War is a rare look at the bonds and service of our soldiers on the frontlines and the profound effect their service has on the loved ones they leave behind. This film screening is a benefit for Operation Gratitude. General Admission Seating. For handicapped seating in an area requiring no stairs to access, please call the Alex Theatre Box Office for information and purchase. Running time is approximately 1 hour 50 minutes with no intermission, and the film screening is suitable for ages 18 and older. Photo/Video recording by patrons is not allowed. No Discounted Pricing is available for this event.

Book and lyrics by Betty Comdem and Adolph Green. Music by Jule Styne.
Comden and Green, who tackled the problems Hollywood players faced in the 1920's with the classic 'Singin' In The Rain', moved up a decade to the 1930's with the hysterically funny 1964 Broadway musical FADE OUT - FADE IN. Originally staring Carol Burnett as Hope Springfield, a chorus girl full of hope but not much talent, the show spoofs some of the great film stars of the era, such as Shirley Temple and Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson. The score is pure Jule Styne brass.

Based on the play BLITHE SPIRIT by Noel Coward
Noel Coward's witty comedy BLITHE SPIRIT (currently being revived on Broadway) is reinvented as a sassy, sly and successful 60's musical. In this sparkling tuneful version, the mischievous spirit of Elvira, the first Mrs. Condomine, bedevils writer Charles Condomine and his wife. Eccentric medium Madame Arcati conjures up the naughty ghost and endeavors to send her back to the other world.

Jeffrey Kahane, conductor Jeremy Denk, piano Stravinsky Concerto in D major for String Orchestra Stravinsky Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments Mozart Rondo in D major for Piano and Orchestra, K. 382 Mozart Symphony No. 41 in C major, K. 551, ('Jupiter')Lift off with Jeremy Denk, who graduated with an unlikely double degree in chemistry and piano performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory.Noted for his fresh musical interpretations, this young American brings his 'bracing, effortlessly virtuosic and utterly joyous' playing (The New York Times) to the works of two earlier musical innovators, Mozart and Stravinsky. The opening works also highlight our 'perfect' violins and the 'exemplary virtuosity and musicality...' of our winds (Resmusica.com, Paris). The penultimate concert of our 41st season concludes with Mozart's 41st Symphony, 'the greatest orchestral work of the world that preceded the French Revolution.' (Sir George Grove, 1906)Jeremy Denk is making arts lovers and intellectuals sit up and take notice. The New Yorker calls him a 'superb musician who writes with arresting sensitivity and wit.' He is gaining traction as much for his playing as his humorous and insightful observations in his popular blog, Think Denk.Part of the orchestral seriesSpecial NoteInterested in Four Seasons? Visit LACO's online store on amazon.com to find great CDs of Vivaldi and Mendelssohn's works and other products that relate to this concert.Pre-concert ProgramConcert Preludes are fun, informative and free to all ticket holders.Join us one hour before each concert in the theatre.
Monday, April 19, 2010 - Musical Theatre Guild Presents Irma La Douce

Music by Margureite Monnot. Lyrics and book by Alexandre Breffort. English lyrics and book by Julian More, David Heneker and Monty Norman.
Set in Paris, this French and West End import revolves around Irma, a carefree Montmartre streetwalker whose life is turned upside down when she falls in love with Nestor le Fripé, a poor law student, who in order to keep her for himself, assumes the disguise of a rich older man. Although the film version unbelievably eliminated the songs, the original is much more fun, especially with the joyous, atmospheric score by Marguerite Monnot.
