“Beneath The Veil” stars Mary Apick, Apick Youssefian, Anthony Azizi and Shani at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale.Starts at 8:00 PM
A provocative look at the clash of secular and political ideologies, 'Beneath the Veil' is timed to commemorate International Women’s Day. This exclusive engagement is produced and directed by Mary Apick in conjunction with the Armenian American Medical Society's Ladies Auxiliary. The play includes traditional Middle Eastern music and dance.
The Critic's Choice play from Los Angeles international Theatre Festival 2005 “Beneath the Veil” is the provocative and spine chilling portrayal of the true lives of women and girls in the 21st century who have been forced to cover their faces in public, as well as those who freely choose to wear the veil. The message of the play is 'choice and freedom”—the birthright of every human, including women and girls.
Using poetry, traditional music, and dance, “Beneath the Veil” relays the true-life stories of six different women in their journey for freedom, equality, and emancipation. It depicts the paradoxes that exist in the world today; of persons who are made to suffer in silence as a result of complex and idiosyncratic decrees and those who live in a boundless land, such as the United States, where they are free to articulate and express their desire to embrace those very same idiosyncrasies.
Thorough an electric ambience, including sublime design elements and mesmerizing dance sequences to a drumbeat, “Beneath the Veil” delivers the universal voice of women. As such, it is a stunning work of art that deserves a vast audience.
“Beneath The Veil” was previously presented in Washington at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Lincoln Center and Geffen Playhouse to sold out crowds.
